"The Last 40 miles"

“The Last 40 Miles,” based on a true story, follows an inmate on his final journey from Texas’s death row in Livingston, to the execution chamber in Huntsville. During the ride, his memories, the scenery flashing by, and the unexpected compassion of the guard escorting him, keep him company.

The animated and rotoscoped short film is the brainchild of British journalist Alex Hannaford, who teamed up with animators Jeff Roth and Lucas Dimick and producer/cinematographer Meg Mulloy. Together with Jennifer Deutrom and Flatblack Films, the group began working on The Last 40 Miles in 2012.

The Last 40 Miles was an official selection at more than 12 festivals around the world, winning:

The film features Austin, Texas, actors Victor Steele, Gary Warner Kent and Al Dinneen, a score by British songwriter Ben Onono, and guitar composition by Julian Mandrake.

EVER SINCE THE dramatic last-minute halt of the execution of Richard Glossip in Oklahoma last fall, exactly what happened that day has remained a mystery. In Washington, D.C., the U.S. Supreme Court had given the green light for Oklahoma to proceed with the execution using a protocol the justices had upheld just months before, in Glossip v. Gross. Outside the Oklahoma State Penitentiary that afternoon, Glossip’s lawyers, his family, and members of the press were all convinced the execution was imminent. Inside, witnesses thought they were about to be escorted to the death chamber. Glossip, meanwhile, stood in his boxer shorts inside a holding cell, waiting to be taken to the gurney.

Bruce Jackson was first drawn to work in prisons during the folk revival of the 1960s. Inspired by folk music collectors like the Lomaxes, he set out to capture work songs sung by African-American convicts, going first to Midwestern prisons when he was a graduate student in Indiana, and later to Texas state prisons while a fellow at Harvard. Over many years and in many prisons, he found and recorded the songs he was looking for, conversations with inmates, guards, and wardens, and thousands upon thousands of photographs.

"Despite progress in abolishing the death penalty, thousands remain on death row"

The number of countries executing prisoners is declining but even so thousands remain on death row, often in appalling conditions and without access to legal services.

In his most recent report to the United Nations General Assembly, the Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, Christof Heyns confirms the trend away from the death penalty. Only 50 of the 193 UN Member States are considered to be retentionist. The remainder have either abolished or introduced a moratorium on the death penalty.

"ANNUAL REPORT ON THE DEATH PENALTY IN IRAN- 2011"

As the Iranian authorities continue the crackdown of the dissidents and the civil society, Iran Human Rights (IHR) presents its annual report on the death penalty in 2011 in Iran. The report was presented in press conferences at the Italian Senate, Paris City Hall and University of Oslo las week.

"Secret Executions in Iran"

The Iranian judiciary and government know that the death penalty is not a suitable solution for fighting crime, particularly drug-related crimes. The basic question is this: why does the Iranian government use this type of punishment with such enthusiasm? The issue is that these executions only create fear and intimidation and serve only a political purpose. All of the statistics show that while the number of executions have increased the number of drug-related crimes have not decreased at all.

"Português de etnia chinesa em risco de ser executado na China"

Lau Fat-wai, cidadão português de etnia chinesa, condenado à morte pelo Tribunal de Guangzhou em 2009, viu a sentença confirmada em segunda instância em setembro de 2011. Corre o risco de ser executado dentro de uma semana, na China.

Lau Fat-wai, foi detido em abril de 2006 na China e acusado de transportar drogas e de contrabandear materiais para fabrico de drogas. Condenado à morte pelo Tribunal de Guangzhou em 2009, viu a sentença confirmada em segunda instância em setembro de 2011. O caso está ainda em apreciação no Supremo Tribunal Popular mas se este ratificar a sentença, Lau Fat-wai poderá ser executado dentro de uma semana.

Lau Fat-wai, de 51 anos, residia em Macau, onde obteve o último passaporte português, em 2003, e Bilhete de Identidade, em 2004.

Independentemente dos delitos que lhe são imputados, a pena de morte é um castigo desumano e inútil.

Apesar dos compromissos assumidos internacionalmente pela China sobre a adoção de padrões internacionais para julgamentos justos, isso não ocorre para os condenados à morte: não existe presunção da inocência, há interferência política e as confissões obtidas sob tortura são aceites como provas. Os acusados têm também frequentemente o acesso aos advogados limitado, aos quais é dado um tempo insuficiente para consultar os processos.

Assine a petição apelando às autoridades chinesas que não executem Lau Fat-wai e para que lhe seja permitido receber visitas da família, que não vê desde 2006, bem como eventual acesso a tratamento médico. Ao assinar esta petição, será automaticamente enviado um email em seu nome ao Chefe do Executivo da Região Administrativa Especial de Macau. A sua assinatura será também enviada ao Presidente do Supremo Tribunal Popular.

Manuela Ferreira Leite e a pena de morte

Manuela Ferreira Leite defendeu ontem, perante as câmaras de televisão, que Quem tem mais de 70 anos e quer fazer hemodiálise tem de pagar.

De acordo com um estudo da Administração Central dos Sistemas de Saúde (ACSS), Os 78,30 euros que o Serviço Nacional de Saúde (SNS) paga por doente por dia aos hospitais públicos que oferecem este tratamento equivalem, respetivamente, a 126% e 139% do custo real, que é de 62,02 euros no HSJ e de 56,30 nos HUC. Isto é, quem faça 3 tratamentos por semana "custa" ao SNS 234,90 euros.

A Drª Manuela Ferreira Leite o que pensa é que quem tem mais de 70 anos, tem que ter este tratamento e não tem 704,70 euros por semana para o pagar deve morrer. A Drª Manuela Ferreira Leite não é a favor do enforcamento mas a favor da eutanásia não consentida. Uma pena de morte!

A Drª Manuela Ferreira Leite deve ser rapidamente internada ou, se se provar que não está doente, impedida de exercer os direitos cívicos de ser eleita ou eleger.

"SAKINEH — FAIR TRIAL OR SHOW TRIAL?"

The world is aware there is no legal basis for the execution of Sakineh by stoning or by hanging, or for her imprisonment. Her barbaric sentence for adultery, following the murder of her husband by criminals subsequently convicted, is not based on evidence as the judiciary acknowledges, now was it ever specified with whom she committed alleged adultery. She was forced to make a confession under extreme duress, which she retracted during the trial.

Now, Sakineh’s 22-year-old son, Sajad has been arrested, with his lawyer Houtan Kian for appealing for the release of his mother.

We call for
THE IMMEDIATE RELEASE OF SAKINEH ASHTIANI’S SON, SAJAD

Sajad has maintained at all times that his mother is fully innocent. He has bravely spoken up in her defence at the risk of his own life. His only crime: that of being a good son. By cutting off Sajad and his lawyer from the outside world the authorities are attempting to silence those who could inform Iranians and the world of the truth of Sakineh's unjust sentence. Confessions recently obtained from Sajad and Kian have no legitimacy since they have had no access to anyone since they were arrested on October 10.

We call upon Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the leaders of Iran to take responsibility for their commitments as a signatory to the International Declaration of Human Rights and related Conventions. And to demand that the Eastern Azerbaijan judiciary free Sakineh, her young son Sajad, and his lawyer, Houtan Kian.
